Book Review: Shannon Dittemore's Broken Wings

After reading Shannon Dittemore's first novel in the series, Angel Eyes, I was curious to read her follow up, and it proved to be even more interesting than the first novel in the series. While it rides a little bit on the fantasy side it has a very appealing story that fits what is in with the teen crowd these days, and still maintains a story that parents will be pleased with as it never gets too raunchy, or uses bad language. This also puts it slightly on the unrealistic side especially as the leads really enjoy making out yet never deal with the topic of abstaining.

Brielle thinks life is coming together great. She has a new found faith in Christ, and has witnessed things regarding angels that have opened her mind up to the spiritual world. She also has met a guy, Jake, who she has fallen for, and who also holds a secret that could potentially wreck the peace she has found. Not everyone is happy with her relationship either, her dad is skeptical of Jake, and seems to be having a tough time accepting their romance. Along with that her dad has began seeing a mysterious new woman who seems plagued with a coldness that is putting Brielle at unease with her presence. All these things seem to be taking place at the time when one of the most dangerous demons gets the ability to see once again, making him an even bigger enemy than he was before.


So much is happening in this book, maybe a little too much, but it does keep it interesting with twists, as it wouldn't be very interesting otherwise. It isn't like the characters have too much depth to them that make them a want to read individual besides Jake who has an ability that makes him fascinating. The other interesting character introduced is Olivia. Her meanness and interesting back story just make her someone you want to learn about, and what you end up finding about her, and Brielle's mom mysterious death makes the book have some great twists that will keep readers on edge.

It had been a little bit of time since reading Angel Eyes, and it's highly recommended to reread it if it's been a while since you picked it up as it isn't the easy book to jump into if you're picking up the second one for the first novel instead of the actual first novel in the series. The back story of what happened in the previous book doesn't really flow over to the other book. Brielle also isn't the most interesting character in the world, and falls into a lot of the writing style that most female characters get put in. She seems like a plank for every other character to be interesting but her.

Also, there are a lot of different stories being built in this novel, and it does make it a tad confusing at times. The perspectives also switch with each chapter, so you may not get the ability to grow with one character or another as it switches to their setting if need be, and away from all other characters. By the end you are building up to an epic little battle that will capture most readers. Despite some interactions that don't seem believable it's a good little book that is a strong follow up in the series, and even better than the novel before it.
