Wednesday Movie Night: Pitch Perfect (2012)

With this being the only movie that Jason Moore has put together it's quite a good one. It has a nice tone of comedy, and the music is catchy as well. The only major thing that seems noticeable is that this is set in college, and feels like it, but there is also something very high school about it. The audience just doesn't seem as the people in the movie. Overall, though it was a fun watch, and a pretty strong first movie for a director.

Beca is a freshman at Barden University, and is working on finding her place at college until she is heard singing in the college by Chloe. She is persuaded to try out for the harmonizing group, The Bellas, but once she gets in the group has so many fragmented places that she ruffles some feathers trying to help put them back together. Aubrey seems most resistant to welcome her into the group. The upcoming competition they have with their male rivals on campus though put them to the test into shaping up to compete especially since the guys keep one upping their talents on theirs around campus.


Anna Kendrick seems to make appearances here and there reminding you she is a good actress with wit. She has yet to make herself a memorable starring role, but with her past movies like 50/50 and Up in the Air you keep remembering how you want to see her in movies. Brittany Snow is an actress that seems to have just disappeared when she suddenly appears in a movie again. It seems Snow is always going to be stuck in these school roles even when she looks like she has reached past the age of 30. She doesn't look like a girl even in college anymore. She looks like a mature woman, and that is a good thing she should utilize.

Anna Camp is surprisingly one of the funniest of the movies. Her one scene near the end is the one you walk away talking about with your friends even though Rebel Wilson has herself in the movie making funny one liners that will live past the movie. Fat Amy is a funny character. With the rise of Bridesmaid bringing her popularity she seems to be building upon it. She seems to have a lot of potential for the future as she is a good actress.

Also, the movie has a lot of talent in it. Harmonizing is one of those things that mesmerizes you because it sounds like it takes a lot of practice and talent to make it come together. So the the sound is really good, and it is captured in this way that makes the whole movie interesting. You see this group grow together, and the music is blended nicely, and you enjoy watching it.

Pitch Perfect is funny, and enjoyable movie to watch. For a director who is putting out his first movie it is also a good debut. The movie is very youthful, which is good, but it also feels very young since they are all supposed to be in college. It feels like they are dealing a little more with teenage problems than adult ones, and maybe that is the problem with what college has become in the first place. High school used to be a place where you tried to mature into an adult before going out into the world, and now somehow people have made college the place for that, and truthfully college is a little too late to be doing that.
