The group also knows how to begin an album. "Love Goes On!" is a fun ballad that has so many turns in, it will keep you listening. It starts out better than it ends though, which is rare for a song to do. After this the band continues on a good streak with "Quiet Heart", which definitely seems like a more quiet, and romantic 80s ballad. It shows that there was still some good music coming out the year I was born, 1988.
The album churns out a few more songs I found enjoyable, and even fun like "Streets of Your Town" and "I'm All Right", but you can hear the back drop of the friction that had occurred in the band in the music they are playing. Most songs border on light 80s pop fun, but you can tell there are some serious matters keeping it a little bit more acoustic and somber.
There is a time on the album where the songs seem to drag into one, and it loses a little of the spark that the first song captured you with in "Love Goes On!". The thing to be enjoyed about the band is that they do mix in this acoustic sound that goes with the singer's voice well. You also have the sole female member who contributes her vocals variously, and everything works well together.
The Go-Betweens sound very 80s, but they have this sound that also doesn't keep it too dated to the time. It's something someone would like if they wanted to listen to music cooler to the time instead. They have a good sound though that produces some really good songs, and then some that get lost in the others because they drag a little. It does also provide a little insight to Australian politics and history with the lyrics if you give it the time to listen to.
